Never Again Krieg ("War")

After Käthe Kollwitz's Krieg series, 1922–23.

Just over one hundred years later,
these images do not feel like history

“I felt that I have no right to withdraw from the responsibility of being an advocate. It is my duty to voice the sufferings of men, the never-ending sufferings heaped mountain-high.” - Käthe Kollwitz

PROJECT STATEMENT

In 1922–23, Käthe Kollwitz completed seven woodcuts about war. As truly anti-war art, her work did not glorify soldiers, show the battlefield or make a memorial to the fallen. She chose to focus on those that carried the grief and trauma for decades without being on the front line. Her subjects: the widow, the grieving parents and the mothers forming a circle around what remains.

Feeling this deeply, I knew that she had already said better something we are experiencing today, and just over one hundred years later, those images do not feel like history.

I have chosen to immerse myself and create a "forensic master study." Like a musician delving into a work as a performer, I am creating the series of seven hand-carved relief prints after Kollwitz's originals, produced at the same scale, on archival papers, hand-burnished with oil ink. Over 700 hours of studio labor. Every plate studied from original Kollwitz prints, including direct study appointments at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. A strictly limited edition of 50 numbered prints per plate. My work is not just to self serve or re-create the work of a master, but to bring awareness to these timeless images, give individuals and institutions a chance to feel them in person, and direct 25% of net revenue to humanitarian relief supporting women and children in active conflict zones.
